The clock ticked 9am, Ali Thompson was next in line for a very competitive job interview. Ali walked into Brew Reaves Engineering Company full of excitement and confidence that this was going to be the biggest break in his career. The package was attractive; accommodation at the plush Valley Towers, a car and several other incentives in addition to his salary. He sparkled in navy blue suit complete with a white shirt and a fuchsia tie with blue stripes. Ali always made a bold statement with his appearance. He stood out among all the other competitors who wore the usual black or brown suits with sunken faces which predicted their doom. Ali was a breath of fresh air.
The secretary signaled Ali to go in for his turn. He stepped into a simple board room and faced a seven panel member committee of Human Resource and departmental experts. Ali was asked a series of regular questions pertaining to the role he had applied for and he aced them. One of the panelists asked “Mr. Thompson, what unique skills have you acquired outside the field of engineering?” For a few minutes Ali was awestruck, he began to think hard to all his days in university, his first job and how much time he had spent working from dawn to dusk doing all the tasks he had been assigned. He thought again and decided that computer literacy was definitely a skill he had mastery over so it should count for something. The panelist interrupted his train of thoughts with a loud “Mr. Thompson?” Ali quickly composed himself and answered that he had computer literacy skills. The panelist shook his head in disgust and signaled the other panelists that he had no further questions. Ali stepped out wondering whether he had just crushed his dreams or aced the interview.
Ali soon found out by an email that he did not qualify for the position of his dreams, the car, house and juicy allowances had all evaporated into thin air. Heaven smiled at him when he met an old friend of his father, who owned a recruitment agency, at Bessy’s bar- a popular lounge in town for true relaxation and business talks one evening. This man, after hearing about Ali’s ordeal then began to give him a speech; that one that changed his life for good. Mr. Selemann’s advice was simple; “The world is evolving, every employer wants to hire a person who is well rounded with exposure to different skills and activities. Employers who have a future in business have moved away from selecting only candidates with numerous certificates. Employers are hiring entrepreneurial minds. Minds that have been developed over time to adapt to changing situations, spot problems and provide solutions. These minds are harnessed through constant learning, relearning and unlearning. Such minds possess a multiplicity of skills not just by talent but by hard work and tenacity of purpose”.
Developing a skill or learning a skill is not a side hustle as many would term it. It is the real hustle. Learning new skills helps your mind to constantly be challenged and exercised. At AISD we challenge you today to evolve beyond yourself, whether you are joining us to learn and start earning or you are joining us train your mind and update your skillset, our doors are open to grow with you.
AISD; Your skill is your certificate!
